Kathy Perales is an artist and an art educator.
The artist inside was always there; striving to come out even while she taught fourth grade and especially when teaching art to 750 elementary children. Now retired from public school teaching, she can devote some time to her love of painting. She says. “ At this time in my art journey, there are no deep, dark, thought provoking inner meanings here. Nope, I want my work to bring a smile to the viewer. That warms my heart and keep me painting.”

Discovering the McNay Art Museum in her hometown of San Antonio gave her an early appreciation for art that grew into a lifelong journey. She majored in Education with a minor in art at Southwest Texas University and when she got her Master of Arts degree in Education at UTSA, the minor was again art.

In 1999, she retired after teaching third grade in Hawaii, fourth grade in North East ISD, San Antonio and art at Mountain Valley Elementary and Intermediate Schools, Canyon Lake; 29 years in all.

She is a member of San Antonio Art Education Association, San Antonio Visual Artists, Texas Retired Teachers Association, Canyon Lake Art Guild and New Braunfels Art League. She now spends her time traveling with her husband, Tony, and painting with watercolor, oil, acrylic, and photographing many subjects. She has studied with Carlene Reeves, Vie Dunn-Harr, Terry Madden, and attended the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain workshop by Betty Edwards. She has studied in Auvillar, France with Jeannette MacDougall, recently with Tom Lynch, Don Ward and Richard Drayton. She feels she is blessed to be around such creative forces. Kathy’s work can be found in private collections from coast to coast and all over Texas.

Kathy says, “The best part of my painting experience is seeing what the paint wants to do and where the painting wants to go. It is amazing to me that each time I start with a plan, very soon it has turned into something else. God works in mysterious ways! I also love seeing the expression on the faces of those who like my work. I am grateful for God’s blessings.”
